Noor Abu Dhabi Solar in Desert and Dogger Bank Wind Power in North Sea

Large scale clean energy is reaching a turning point in the Middle East with Solar PV plus desalination plants. This development is happening in tandem with cheaper offshore wind energy in Northern Europe:

There remain "factions" in MENA countries wedded to Oil & Gas, but signs are increasing signs of a realisation of what needs to be done. The Noor Abu Dhabi solar plant covers 13 km2, with a rating of 1.2 GW, and 3.2 million panels. The CAPEX cost was USD 870 M and OPEX is minimal. Developed by the Abu Dhabi Govt., Marubeni Japan and Chinese Jinko Solar.  and Levelised Cost of Energy [LCOE] is only USD 2.4 cents/kwHr. Solar Star California is 1.7 million panels and 579 MW, for comparison.

Dogger Bank Offshore Wind Projects

The Noor solar project cost roughly half the CAPEX of each of the projected construction costs for 3 No. 1.2 GW offshore wind projects in the UK offshore zone recently announced for Dogger Bank North Sea, 80 miles off the Yorkshire coast. These three projects will consist of a total of 300 No. 12 MW rated French built General Electric (USA) turbines for roughly double the CAPEX and each with the same output as the Noor PV Solar plant (~1.2 GW).

The Dogger Bank offshore wind projects were recently won in a 4th Round of auction bids by a Norwegian [Equinor]/Spanish [Iberdrola] consortium @ USD 5 cents/kwHr, still broadly as cheap as CCGT gas and cheaper than nuclear energy in Europe. They will be online in 2025/2026.
